The Polish Rehabilitation Society was created in 1989, a year of rapid political, economic and social transformation in Poland. Statutory tasks of the Society include education, the gaining of knowledge, support of research in the field of rehabilitation, supervision of the development of rehabilitation, cooperation with organizations involved in rehabilitation in Poland and abroad, representing Polish rehabilitation, and spreading of a humanistic tenet, particularly in the context of persons with disabilities.
The structure of PRS includes main Board, 15 Regional Divisions, Auditory Committee, Arbitrary Committee, Historical Section, Section of Rehabilitation of Children and Adolescents, Section of Oncological Rehabilitation, Section of Rehabilitation in Health Resorts, Section of Pulmonary Rehabilitation, Section of Rehabilitation of Persons with Disorders of Sense Organs. Sections organize numerous scientific sessions and symposia in cooperation with other organizations. The representatives of the Society sit on examination groups and at national examination juries for the titles of PRM specialists. The Polish Rehabilitation Society is linked in close collaboration with other organizations and scientific bodies and involved in rehabilitation and care on disabled persons in Poland (the Committee for Rehabilitation and Social Integration of the Polish Academy of Sciences, the Polish Society for Rehabilitation of the Disabled, the Polish Society of Balneology and Physical Medicine). At its beginning, The Polish Rehabilitation Society was linked in partnership with the International Society for Rehabilitation of the Disabled (Rehabilitation International). In April 2003 The Polish Rehabilitation Society became a member of the International Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (ISPRM). A declaration of intention for cooperation in the domains of education, quality of care, and the field of competence in Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine between the Section and Board of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine of the Union of European Medical Specialists (UEMS-PRM) and The Polish Rehabilitation Society was signed on September 1, 2011. Since 2015 the Polish Rehabilitation Society is the member of ESPRM.
Due to epidemiologic situation associated with the COVID-19 outbreak, the 20th National Symposium of the Polish Rehabilitation Society originally planned for May 2020 will be postponed, and will take place in Nadarzyn near Warsaw, between 18-20 February 2021.
